By Luxury Phinisi Labuan Bajo Editorial Desk
A luxury phinisi is a market label for charter boats from Labuan Bajo; one Komodo operator guide says charters are priced per boat, and we have found no authority that defines "luxury". Published rates sit in the price table on this page. They are starting figures for one boat at a time, so compare inclusions, tax basis, minimum stay and deposit terms before you compare the number.
This guide lines up what sellers publish, and names the seller each time. This site publishes no boat catalogue and sells no departures. The boats named below are examples taken from their operators' or agents' public pages, and naming one is neither a recommendation nor a statement that it is free on your dates.
What is a luxury phinisi from Labuan Bajo?
Start with the word itself. UNESCO ties Pinisi to the rig and sail of Sulawesi's schooner rather than to any class of cruise boat, and its 2017 inscription honours the boatbuilding art of South Sulawesi. The market in Labuan Bajo uses the word more loosely. A Komodo operator guide published by Komodo Resort says yachts in the European sense are rare among charter boats there; most are phinisi with engines, cabins and air conditioning added, and they seldom stay under canvas for long.
"Luxury" is a seller's label on top of that. The same guide offers one way of sorting the fleet, shown here as its author wrote it:
| Label in the Komodo Resort guide | Length | Cabins and bathrooms | Other points the guide names |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard wooden phinisi | Often 18 to 25 m | 2 to 5 cabins, shared or private bathrooms | None listed in this band |
| Deluxe phinisi | Usually 22 to 30 m | 4 to 8 en-suite cabins | None listed in this band |
| Luxury phinisi and superyachts | 30 to 60 m or more | Large cabins | A chef, a high crew ratio, water toys, a tender |
Those bands overlap, and they belong to one guide. Komodo Trips works with Superior, Deluxe and Luxury instead, so a boat can carry one label on one site and another label elsewhere. Ask instead for the facts behind the label: length, number of cabins, bathroom arrangement, crew on board and the guest limit shown on official papers. Our page on how vessel classes are described takes the labels apart in more detail.
What do published rates show, and what do they leave out?
The price table on this page holds six figures. Two are operator rates for 2027 dates (Lamima and Vela), three are agent "from" rates (Sanctuary, Aliikai and Ikan Kayu), and one is the foreign visitor's park ticket as Kompas reports it under Government Regulation 36/2024. Read each row for three things before the number:
- Unit. The boat rows are per night for the whole boat. The park ticket is per person per day, and it may land on a different bill altogether.
- Tax. Lamima adds 11% VAT to its published rate, and Vela marks its rate as subject to 12% VAT. Navelia shows both boats at the same base figures with no tax stated on its fleet page. These pages yield no single VAT figure for the whole market.
- Status. An operator rate is the seller's own figure for stated dates. An agent's "from" rate is a starting point that knows nothing about your trip, and another seller of the same boat may print a different one.
No row can tell you whether the boat will be in Komodo on your dates, whether those dates are open, or what a seller will agree to in a contract. Legal capacity sits on the vessel's papers; dates and contract terms sit in a written offer. We also print no market average, because one blended figure would hide the differences this guide exists to show.
For the longer list, go to the published luxury phinisi prices page, and for the gap between a listed figure and a real one, read published price versus quote.
Why do inclusions differ so much from one boat to the next?
Because "the rate" buys a different bundle on each boat. Vela's published rate bundles spa treatments of up to four hours a day, Starlink, park entrance fees and permits, and airport transfers with the crew, fuel, meals, soft drinks, activities and diving for certified divers. Lamima's private charter rate goes further on drinks, taking in alcohol, and also names laundry, massages, water toys, scuba diving, transfers, boat clearance fees and Starlink.
Now set that beside the Komodo Resort guide, which describes park fees as collected per person or per group, frequently in cash, and almost never part of the boat price. The two statements do not cancel each other out. The guide speaks about the Labuan Bajo market in general; each rate page speaks about one boat. Your job is to find out which case applies to the offer on your desk.
Three published sets of terms, side by side, show how far apart they can sit. These are examples and not a ranking.
| Term | Vela (operator pages) | Lamima (operator page) | Phinisi 50 (agent listing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tax as published | Subject to 12% VAT | Plus 11% VAT | 10% government taxes included |
| Minimum stay | 4 nights in Komodo; shorter trips may carry added fees | Not found | 7 days |
| Deposit | 30% at booking, or 50% | Not found | 50%, all payments non-refundable |
| Park entrance fees | Included | Included | Excluded |
| Alcohol | Excluded | Included | Excluded, as is corkage |
| Airport transfers | Included | Included, airport or hotel | Excluded |
| Internet | Starlink included | Starlink included | Telecommunication charges excluded |
Sources for the table: Vela's FAQ for the minimum and deposit, Vela's rate page for the rest; Lamima's rate page; the Phinisi 50 listing on Boatbookings. "Not found" means we have not found a source, not that the term does not exist.
Turn every offer you receive into a list with the same lines as this table, and mark each line included, excluded or silent. A silent line is a question to send back, not a free extra. The page on what is included and the list of common exclusions give you the longer versions of those lines.
When do luxury phinisi actually sail Komodo?
For part of the year, and not always the same part. Navelia says Komodo is best from May to October and Raja Ampat from November to April, with most yachts relocating as the seasons turn. Vela's own rate calendar is narrower, placing the boat in Komodo from May to September. So a rate you found in January may describe a boat that spends that month a long way from Labuan Bajo.
Treat the month as a question for the named boat rather than for the destination. The best time to charter page compares the calendars, and the December to March guide deals with the months when flagships publish other waters.
What should you check before paying a deposit?
Start with what a sailing clearance does and does not prove. The head of the Labuan Bajo harbourmaster's office (KSOP) told Detik that the clearance, known as the SPB, is paperwork: it carries no duty to go aboard and look, although the office can inspect a boat known or reported to be unseaworthy. The proof of seaworthiness is a ship safety certificate, granted after inspection and testing, and the same report puts those checks at every three months for Labuan Bajo tourist boats. A boat leaving harbour with clearance has therefore not necessarily been looked over that morning. Ask to see the certificate and its date.
Some operators publish more than the minimum. Lamima says RINA certifies it and surveys it annually. That is the operator's own statement, and the way to test it is the same: ask for the document. A seller's web page is not an official record, so get capacity confirmed in writing for any boat.
Before any money moves, work through this order:
- Name the company you would be paying, and check that it matches the name on the contract and the invoice.
- Get boat name, length, cabins and guest limit in writing, then compare them with the documents worth asking to see.
- Read the safety equipment guide and ask how that boat meets each point.
- Mark every inclusion line, using the table above as your template.
- Read the deposit and cancellation terms as if the trip will not happen, because weather can decide that for you.
- Use the provider checklist to test the seller as well as the boat.
Who writes this guide, and what is our interest?
The Luxury Phinisi Labuan Bajo Editorial Desk writes it. The site is a specialist brand under Juara Holding Group: a sourced guide with a request desk attached. Requests through the desk can lead to a contract with our companies, so test our offer like any other, including against every line on this page. The site itself is not a contracting party; brokerage, central agency, charter marketing and commercial representation contracts are issued by PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara. The desk answers questions, and nothing binds anyone until you accept a written offer. The about page and the disclaimer set this out in full.
Which published prices did we check?
Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What other questions come up?
Is luxury phinisi a regulated class of boat?
Not on any scale we have found. The labels come from the sellers and guides who use them, and two sites can sort the same fleet differently, so ask for length, cabins and crew instead of relying on the label.
Are Komodo park fees part of the charter price?
Only on some boats. Vela and Lamima put park entrance fees inside the rate, the Phinisi 50 listing leaves them out, and one Komodo operator guide treats them as a rare inclusion. Check the line in your own offer.
Why does one boat show different prices on different sites?
Two sellers may list the same boat, each with its own figure, and a from rate carries no dates, so two pages may simply be describing different trips. Ask each seller for the same dates and the same group.
Does a sailing clearance prove an inspection took place?
No. By the account of the local harbourmaster's office, the clearance is an administrative step and carries no duty to board the boat. Ask for the ship safety certificate and look at its date.
Can I book a boat on this site?
No. The site has no booking system and no boat catalogue. You can send the desk your dates and group, the desk replies, and no one is bound until you accept a written offer.
